MAHJ 102: GUIDED PLAY

Please download (and print) the “Cheat Sheet” found under the “Students Only” section on my website. This can also be found in your notes from MAHJ 101. Please bring this printout along with a current NMJL Card to class (if you own one).

Description:

Come sharpen your skills and experience the game in a supportive, hands-on environment!

Perfect for those who have completed MAHJ 101 and are comfortable with tile identification and deciphering the card, this 2-hour guided play session is designed to help beginners build confidence in their gameplay! (we do not play in pairs).  An instructor will be present to provide a quick review and guide the room through the complexities of setup, the deal and the Charleston. Tables will play independently once the 1st discard is thrown. The instructor will float around the room, answering questions that arise and providing additional support as needed.

Session Highlights:

  • Perfect for beginners familiar with basic rules and tile identification
  • Instructor guidance to get games started, with support available throughout
  • Focus is on independent play with opportunities to ask questions as needed
  • A fun, low-pressure environment to practice and reinforce your skills

8+ people. @2 hrs.

Please bring the current NMJL Card (published each April) if you have one. You can purchase a NMJL Card here: National Mah Jongg League : The Store

Note: This session could have up to 20 participants though that is not typically the case. Should you need a lot of hand holding or instructor attention, it may be best to repeat Mahj 101 or to book a Private Group Lesson (see below) .  If you need more practice with The Charleston and Choosing a Hand, you may want to also take a Mahj 103 class.

MAHJ 103: THE CHARLESTON (*new offering*)

(prerequisite: MAHJ 102)

Please download (and print) the “Cheat Sheet” found under the “Students Only” section on my website. This can also be found in your notes from MAHJ 101. Please bring this printout along with a current NMJL Card to class.

Description:

This class focuses primarily on The Charleston and How to Choose a Hand.  Through guided examples and instructor-led discussion, participants will learn how to identify playable hands based on their initial deal, pass tiles strategically, and adjust their plan as tiles dance around the table. We may or may not have time to play a full game as we will focus most of our attention on the “swapping phase” of Mahjong.

Session Highlights:

  • Focus is on the 1st Charleston, 2nd Charleston and Courtesy Pass
  • Choosing a hand(s) based on your tiles (not just wishful thinking!)
  • Strategic passing: what to pass, what to keep, and when to pivot
  • Guided examples and instructor-led discussion
