LIFEGUARD AND CPR/AED FOR THE PROFESSIONAL RESCUER
Our American Red Cross Lifeguarding course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. SPCC adopted the Red Cross blended learning format which combines online learning with in-person skills training.  Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED certifications that are valid for 2 years.  All participants must be at least 15 years old by the last date of the course, attend all training sessions, perform all skills with 100% accuracy, and pass a written test with a score of at least 80%.  By registering for an aquatics class, you certify that you have read, understood, and agreed to our registration policies and waivers.

Refunds are not given unless a session is cancelled.  Credits for medical conditions are considered and are only valid 6 months from the issue date.  Individual classes cancelled due to inclement weather or pool maintenance/repair will be rescheduled.  Please note: Lifeguards must be 15 to obtain an Anne Arundel County Lifeguard certification.

Students must successfully complete a pre-course screening which includes:
  1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swim goggles may be used.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (Swim goggles are not allowed)
  • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, and retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on back with both hands, holding the object at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using ladder or steps

A nonrefundable deposit of $147.50 is due upon registration.  Students should bring the balance due with them to the first day of class along with proof of age.

What Our Community Is Saying

As a former competitive swimmer myself, I introduced my daughter  to swimming at a tender age of 6 months; however she was so terrified of being in any body of water such that even giving her a bath was quite a challenge.
However at age 4 she suddenly told us that she wanted to learn how to swim and so we brought her to Severna Park Community Center (SPCC) and what a beautiful experience we have had. The instructors are so polite, professional and sensitive to the needs of each individual child and our daughter fit right in.  At SPCC she has progressed from not knowing how to swim to being one of the best swimmers in her age group! We as parents are so proud of her achievements at SPCC with the help of the super wonderful aquatic center staff.  We highly recommend SPCC aquatic center to any parent that is serious about having their child/children learn how to swim and you will not be disappointed!
