Dance History and Mission

THE DANCE CENTER OF SEVERNA PARK

Dance Center Severna Park
Welcome to The Dance Center of Severna Park, members of Dance Masters of America and The Cecchetti Council of America.

The Dance Center of Severna Park (DCSP) opened its studio doors as part of SPCC on July 1, 2013 with staff rooted in the rich legacy of The Carter School of Dance, a local studio whose 50-year tradition of excellence launched thousands of young ballerinas. Many of our instructors grew up dancing for the Carter School of Dance and have returned to the program to extend that legacy to new generations of dancers.

Our philosophy encourages all dancers to grow emotionally and physically through the discipline and continuity of the art of dance.

Building on the artistic vision and creative foundation of local dance legend Mary V. Carter, founder of the Carter School of Dance, DCSP offers classes for students age 3 through adult, beginner through advanced levels.  We emphasize the development of disciplined dancers: our beginner classes practice to live musical accompaniment so that our teacher can fully focus the needs of her students, allowing her to reinforce technique and instruction while encouraging the students' self-confidence.  Most of our classes culminate in a June recital.

We train our dancers using the Cecchetti Method of classical ballet technique, a rigorous curriculum that develops essential dance qualities: balance, poise, and strength. We believe that ballet is the cornerstone of dance, forming a strong foundation for all other styles of dance that our older students may choose to pursue in our studios.

In this same tradition, we teach Broadway-style, classic tap to our dancers.   We focus even our youngest dancers on musicality, rhythm, and technique.   We use tap as a secondary building block: it gives our dancers a different style of movement, allowing them to transition more easily to other styles of dance as they continue their training.

We are especially proud of DCSP's rich local history and our well-earned reputation of producing disciplined, graceful ballerinas with elegant, classic style.  We encourage you to visit the DCSP studios to learn more about our programs and meet our warm, welcoming instructors.

What Our Community Is Saying

As a former competitive swimmer myself, I introduced my daughter  to swimming at a tender age of 6 months; however she was so terrified of being in any body of water such that even giving her a bath was quite a challenge.
However at age 4 she suddenly told us that she wanted to learn how to swim and so we brought her to Severna Park Community Center (SPCC) and what a beautiful experience we have had. The instructors are so polite, professional and sensitive to the needs of each individual child and our daughter fit right in.  At SPCC she has progressed from not knowing how to swim to being one of the best swimmers in her age group! We as parents are so proud of her achievements at SPCC with the help of the super wonderful aquatic center staff.  We highly recommend SPCC aquatic center to any parent that is serious about having their child/children learn how to swim and you will not be disappointed!
