OUR STORY
Started in 1995, the Severna Park Community Center was founded as a gift to the community from Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church when it was purchased from the YMCA of Severna Park.
Members of Woods Church believed that the existing main pool and building could continue to serve the community when the YMCA left, and purchased the property to make that possible. Since that founding, the facility has grown to include a fitness center, gymnasium, dance studios, and a number of spaces used for classes, programs, workshops and community/family celebrations.
A fully independent, 501c3 nonprofit organization, SPCC holds its own mortgage, and is supported by an Executive Director and a working Board of Directors comprised of 16 business leaders and active volunteers from within the Anne Arundel County community.
Recently, the Board of Directors completed a strategic planning process, establishing a two-year plan for the center coming out of the pandemic. Three key areas of focus were defined: community service, visibility & engagement, and organizational excellence. Within those focus areas, the Board set five goals for the next two years:
Connect our community inside and outside the center
SPCC is a non-membership facility. Visitors pay only for the program or activity of interest - some of which are at no charge at all. In 1997, through the gracious donations of community members and with a limited amount of county funding, a $6m renovation and expansion was completed. It has transformed the corner of Cypress Creek Road and B&A Blvd. in Severna Park into a state-of-the-art public recreation and meeting facility. The Severna Park Community Center is the only one of its kind in the area.
Though the building is complete, SPCC continues fundraising to pay off the cost of the expansion and remaining construction debt. To support the center in its mission, please consider volunteering or donating to Severna Park Community Center.

Connect our community inside and outside the center
- To better serve the community, we will proactively build meaningful relationships, expand services for underserved individuals and families, connect users to resources needed within our mission context, and create new opportunities to gather.
- To become the local hub for quality services and programs, we will build mid-day program partnerships, enhance and modernize technology across the facility, and develop, test, and grow new offerings for diverse audiences.
- To improve visitor experiences and expand utilization of the center, we will develop better brand awareness, enhance messaging, and strengthen joint marketing with our partners.
- To ensure the longevity of the center to serve the community, we will enhance program offerings, develop new predictable streams, and drive strategic planning and measurement to maintain SPCC's future as an integral resource for the Anne Arundel County community.
- To promote the center as a multi-generational destination for healthy lifestyles, we will create a holistic wellness focus for all ages, develop community-centered health events, and expand relationships with wellness and mental health partners.
